English Summary
The aim of the various grants is to stimulate contemporary visual art, design and/or architecture. There are different grants for visual artists, designers and architects. Most of the grants are open to those who have recently graduated from an academy or technical university as well as to those who have been professionally active for some time. The main criterion in considering applications for grants is artistic quality. The panel will consider such things as the existence of a coherent artistic vision, how this is expressed in the work and how it relates to the context of the discipline concerned. Other related activities undertaken by the applicant may also be taken into account.
starter stipend
A starter stipend is intended to help beginning visual artists, designers or architects to develop further. The stipend enables them to concentrate on their artistic and professional development. In principle, recipients of a starter stipend may use it as they see fit in setting up their professional practice. The stipend may be used for living expenses, regular professional expenses, the purchase of equipment and/or the lease of a work space. In addition, the money may be used for conducting research, taking part in exhibitions, competitions, events or shows at home and abroad, realizing projects, work experience or a period of work abroad.
- A starter stipend is worth € 18,000 for a period of twelve months.
- A starter stipend can be applied for up to 4 years after completing a course in visual arts, design or architecture at an academy of art or a technical university.
contribution to working budget
A contribution to a working budget (CWB) may be requested by visual artists, designers, architects and cultural mediators for a wide range of plans. In principle, every time-limited artistic work plan may be regarded as a project for the purpose of this grant. For example, an individual could apply for a CWB for the making of an installation, the carrying out of research, the production of new works for an exhibition, participation in a competition, a period of work experience or for the preparation, development or realization of a unique design. Cultural mediators can apply for a CWB for conducting preliminary research, writing an essay or book, organizing a symposium or cultural event or design an exhibition on a particular theme.
It is also possible to request a CWB for a trip or a period of work abroad. Obviously it is impossible to give an exhaustive list of possibilities here. The whole idea of the CWB is to facilitate all kinds of plans with an artistic content. The maximum duration of this grant is in principle 12 months.
- One can apply for a standard or a flexible CWB. A standard CWB consists of € 2.500 a month. The actual amount of a flexible CWB will be determined in relation to the plan, the budget and the duration of the project.
basic stipend
A basic stipend intends to enable visual artists and autonomous designers to maintain a basic level of professional practice. In assessing applications for this grant, the panels consider whether the applicant's artistic practice contributes to the breadth and diversity of visual arts or autonomous design in the Netherlands. In other words, both the quality of the work and its public reception play a role in the assessment. In addition, any related activities an applicant undertakes in the field of publicity, teaching or organization may also be taken into account.
- A basic stipend (€ 36.000) consists of a contribution to basic living costs (€ 21.000) and a contribution to professional expenses (€15.000). Only visual artists and autonomous designers who have been professionally active for longer than eight years are eligible for a basic stipend. A basic stipend is intended to cover a period of at least 2 years. This stipend can be awarded only once every 4 years.
- The amount linked to a basic stipend or production grant is intended to cover a minimum of 24 months. Actual use of the award money may, however, be spread over a much longer period, depending on the applicant's own income and individual needs. Recipients can indicate when and how much they would like transferred by the Fonds BKVB. Should an artist's income (temporarily) exceed the stipulated limit of € 35,000, they may leave their basic stipend untouched for that period without forfeiting their right to call on it again at a later date. The amount is still credited to their name and may be drawn on again when the artist's own income is inadequate.
practice grant
Practice grants are aimed at designers and architects and are intended to enable them to continue production of their work at a basic level. The grant is a contribution to regular professional expenses such as studio or workshop rental, a foreign trip for the purpose of presenting the applicant's work or research, the production of promotional materials, cost of work materials, a standard publication about the applicant's work, et cetera. The practice grant does not include any contribution to living costs.
- A practice grant is an amount of € 15,000 for a maximum of 12 months and can be awarded only once in two years.
study grant
A study grant is intented for a study abroad. However, this is only permitted if a similar study does not excist in the Netherlands. The studygrant is meant for a contribution to neccesary studycosts, living expenses and travel costs. The grant must be considered as a contribution to the total amount of studycosts.
- a study grant can be applied for by visual artists, desingers and architects who have been professionally active for longer than four years or have attended a course in visual arts, design or architecture at an academy for at least two years.
- there is no maximum amount one can apply for, yet the Fonds BKVB requests that the applicant will search for cofinancers.
- at this moment, one can apply for a study grant throughout the year. However, this will change into applying twice a year. This will be announced in different media as this website and advertisements.
