Last June, the Ministry of OCW announced that Design, Architecture, the Gamefund an the TAX-videoclipfund will be transferred to the The Netherlands Architecture Fund (SFA). That means that, as of January 1st 2012, designers, architects, game- and video artists can no longer apply at the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture. As of Januari 1st 2012, applications for these disciplines have to be filed at The Netherlands Architecture Fund. Applications that are filed at the Fonds BKVB before this date, will be treated by the Fonds BKVB.

The aim of the various grants is to stimulate contemporary visual art. There are different grants for visual artists. Most of the grants are open to those who have recently graduated from an academy as well as to those who have been professionally active for some time. The main criterion in considering applications for grants is artistic quality. The panel will consider such things as the existence of a coherent artistic vision, how this is expressed in the work and how it relates to the context of the discipline concerned. Other related activities undertaken by the applicant may also be taken into account.

starter stipend
A starter stipend is intended to help beginning visual artists to develop further. The stipend enables them to concentrate on their artistic and professional development. In principle, recipients of a starter stipend may use it as they see fit in setting up their professional practice. The stipend may be used for living expenses, regular professional expenses, the purchase of equipment and/or the lease of a work space. In addition, the money may be used for conducting research, taking part in exhibitions, competitions, events or shows at home and abroad, realizing projects, work experience or a period of work abroad.

- A starter stipend is worth € 18,000 for a period of twelve months.
- A starter stipend can be applied for up to 4 years after completing a course in visual arts at an academy of art.

contribution to working budget
A contribution to a working budget (CWB) may be requested by visual artists and cultural mediators for a wide range of plans. In principle, every time-limited artistic work plan may be regarded as a project for the purpose of this grant. For example, an individual could apply for a CWB for the making of an installation, the carrying out of research, the production of new works for an exhibition, participation in a competition, a period of work experience or for the preparation, development or realization of a unique design. Cultural mediators can apply for a CWB for conducting preliminary research, writing an essay or book, organizing a symposium or cultural event or design an exhibition on a particular theme.
It is also possible to request a CWB for a trip or a period of work abroad. Obviously it is impossible to give an exhaustive list of possibilities here. The whole idea of the CWB is to facilitate all kinds of plans with an artistic content. The maximum duration of this grant is in principle 12 months.

- One can apply for a standard or a flexible CWB. A standard CWB consists of € 2.500 a month. The actual amount of a flexible CWB will be determined in relation to the plan, the budget and the duration of the project.

basic stipend
A basic stipend intends to enable visual artists to maintain a basic level of professional practice. In assessing applications for this grant, the panels consider whether the applicant's artistic practice contributes to the breadth and diversity of visual arts in the Netherlands. In other words, both the quality of the work and its public reception play a role in the assessment. In addition, any related activities an applicant undertakes in the field of publicity, teaching or organization may also be taken into account.

- A basic stipend (€ 36.000) consists of a contribution to basic living costs (€ 21.000) and a contribution to professional expenses (€15.000). Only visual artists who have been professionally active for longer than eight years are eligible for a basic stipend. A basic stipend is intended to cover a period of at least 2 years. This stipend can be awarded only once every 4 years.
- The amount linked to a basic stipend or production grant is intended to cover a minimum of 24 months. Actual use of the award money may, however, be spread over a much longer period, depending on the applicant's own income and individual needs. Recipients can indicate when and how much they would like transferred by the Fonds BKVB. Should an artist's income (temporarily) exceed the stipulated limit of € 35,000, they may leave their basic stipend untouched for that period without forfeiting their right to call on it again at a later date. The amount is still credited to their name and may be drawn on again when the artist's own income is inadequate.

publication grant
A publication grant enables visual artists to produce a publication about their work that will contribute to the debate about the development of visual art and/or serve to locate the work within that development. The application can relate to either a printed or a digital publication.
-Publication grants are limited to 50 % of the total costs.
